Overview
Registered in 2002, 'Purple Mountain Majesties' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Galaxy' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Maekawa' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its upright, vase-shaped habit and bold foliage: dark blue-green leaves with irregular, greenish-yellow margins, a glaucous bloom on the undersides, and a heavily corrugated, moderately cupped surface.
In the Garden
'Purple Mountain Majesties' forms a substantial clump reaching 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter. Its upright, rugged form and thick, corrugated leaves make it suitable for partially shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue-green and gold coloration. Its large size precludes use in small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may damage foliage, the thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance compared to thinner-leaved cultivars.
