Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Purple Flush' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Halcyon' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Gold Regal' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and by the notable purple flush that appears in the middle of each flower petal.
In the Garden
'Purple Flush' forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its rich blue foliage provides strong contrast when paired with gold- or chartreuse-leaved companions such as *H.* 'Gold Regal' or *H.* 'Sum and Substance'. Its medium size makes it appropriate for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While not noted as exceptionally susceptible, standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
