Overview
Registered in 1993 by C. Lantis and introduced by P. Ruh, 'Purple Charmer' is a small variegated hosta derived from a cross between *Hosta gracillima* and *Hosta* 'Ogon Koba'. The cultivar is distinguished by its medium green leaves with smooth margins, a slight sheen on both surfaces, and a rounded leaf base, producing a compact mound.
In the Garden
'Purple Charmer' reaches a mature size of 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. The dark green scape, which can extend up to 24 inches (61.0 cm), carries flowers that attract pollinators.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the foliage is palatable to both.
