Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster (AHS), *Hosta* 'Pumpkin Pie' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its two-tone foliage: a pumpkin orange-yellow center with medium green, slightly rippled margins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, feature 7 to 9 vein pairs, a lightly folded and wavy form, and moderate corrugation; the upper surface is slightly shiny, while the underside is dull.
In the Garden
This mound-forming hosta reaches 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of the genus, and its small stature makes it well-suited for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its compact habit.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pumpkin Pie' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures may be necessary.
