Overview
Registered in 2012, 'Prince of Wales' is a giant hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Elegans' (pod parent) and *Hosta montana* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its exceptionally large, cupped, and heavily corrugated blue-green leaves that retain a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, combined with tall scapes bearing elongated flower trusses.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in height and 70 inches (177.8 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, where its blue-green foliage color is best maintained. Given its giant size, it is well-suited as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a shaded border; it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
