Overview

Registered in 2005 by M. Chastain and G. R. Goodwin, *Hosta* 'Prime Meridian' is a giant sieboldiana-type cultivar distinguished by its large, deeply corrugated leaves with creamy white margins and a notably thin central variegation pattern. The broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves measure 12 inches (30.5 cm) long by 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide, with 14 vein pairs, a slightly rippled margin, and moderate cupping, twisting, folding, and waviness.

In the Garden

'Prime Meridian' forms an upright to mound-like clump reaching 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. Its substantial size makes it appropriate for use as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders, where its textured foliage provides contrast with finer-textured shade perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed preventatively.
