Overview

Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Primal Scream' is a large cultivar distinguished by its intensely folded, deeply cupped blue-green leaves with irregular creamy white streaking and white margins. The foliage is broadly ovate with cordate bases, moderately corrugated, and bears a glaucous bloom on the undersides; as the season progresses, the leaves turn upward.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches approximately 28 inches (71 cm) in height and 42 inches (107 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and its substantial leaf texture provides contrast alongside finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The tall scapes, reaching 45 to 55 inches (114 to 140 cm), bear green stems with some streaking and elevate the flowers well above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable for this large-leaved cultivar in typical hosta-growing zones.
