Overview
Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Primal Fear' is a large cultivar distinguished by its uniquely upward-pointing, moderately cupped leaves. The broadly ovate, medium green foliage (11 inches long, 7 inches wide) bears 0.25-inch creamy white, slightly rippled margins, with a dull surface above and below, moderate cupping and folding, and light waviness and corrugation. Some leaves exhibit streaking.
In the Garden
Reaching 38 inches in diameter and 22 inches in height with a moderate growth rate, 'Primal Fear' performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas. Its upright habit and tall, rigid green scapes (36 to 42 inches) bearing a profusion of off-white flowers in early to mid-July make it a strong specimen for mid-border or woodland garden positions. The large size and bold foliage pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not suited for container culture due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, dull leaves may be attractive to both pests.
