Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Prairie Fire' registered in 2009, 'Prairie Sunset' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by blue-green leaves with broad, flat gold margins. The leaf surfaces are dull on top with a thin glaucous bloom beneath, and the margins are dark green rather than gold, creating a subtle reverse coloration from the typical gold-margined blue hosta.
In the Garden
'Prairie Sunset' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers and dark green margins remain most distinct. The broad, ovate leaves with rounded bases and moderate corrugation provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical hosta-growing zones apply; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as with other hostas.
