Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Prairie Sky' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from an unnamed seedling. Its most distinctive features are the powdery blue-green leaves with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, flat margins, and a broadly ovate shape with a cordate base.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue coloration is most pronounced. The 7-inch-long by 6-inch-wide leaves, with 9 to 11 vein pairs, are lightly cupped and hold their color well into the season. Blue-green scapes rise 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm) above the foliage. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting foliage textures.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Prairie Sky' may be damaged by slugs and deer; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
