Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Prairie Moon' is a large, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage, resulting from an open-pollinated cross with a streaked pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with broad, irregular gold margins, chartreuse scapes, and petioles speckled with red spots.
In the Garden
'Prairie Moon' forms a substantial mound 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. Its broadly ovate, lightly wavy leaves—9.5 inches (24.1 cm) long and 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide—are yellow with flat margins, slightly shiny above and glaucous beneath. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it unsuitable for containers but effective as a specimen or in mixed borders.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Prairie Moon' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
