Overview

Registered in 1994, 'Prairie Fire' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Gold Regal' (pod parent) and a gold seedling of *H.* 'Tokudama' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of blue-green leaf centers with deep gold, slightly rippled margins, a color pattern that becomes more pronounced as the season progresses.

In the Garden

Reaching 13 inches (33 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, 'Prairie Fire' forms a semi-upright clump suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the gold margins hold their color without scorching. Companion plants with contrasting foliage, such as ferns or heucheras, complement its compact habit.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer weather, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Prairie Fire' may require protection from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
