Overview

Registered in 2009, 'Prairie Dawn' is a medium-sized hosta resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Gold Regal' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Vision' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, each bordered by a one-inch-wide yellow margin that matures to gold.

In the Garden

'Prairie Dawn' reaches a mature spread of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with a semi-upright, moderately fast growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, where the glaucous bloom and margin contrast are most pronounced. Its medium size and moderate corrugation make it suitable for mixed shade borders or as a specimen in woodland gardens; it pairs well with ferns or other fine-textured perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in vulnerable gardens.
