Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Powder Blue' registered in 2010, 'Powder Keg' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins that exhibit irregular green streaks and mottled areas. The leaf surface carries a glaucous bloom on both sides, and the broadly ovate, cordate-based blades are moderately wavy and corrugated, with 14 to 16 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Powder Keg' forms a substantial mound reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous foliage color is best preserved. The creamy white variegation and mottling provide contrast when planted near darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and employ control measures if needed.
