Overview

Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Powder Blue' is a giant blue-green cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its heavily rippled leaf margins, cordate leaf bases, and a pronounced glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides.

In the Garden

'Powder Blue' forms a substantial upright mound reaching 27 inches (68.6 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is preserved. Its large, heavily textured leaves make it a suitable specimen or background plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens; it is not recommended for container culture due to its giant size.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, rippled leaves offer moderate slug resistance, though standard slug control measures may still be necessary in damp conditions.
