Overview

Registered in 2015 by J. Schwarz and M. Gilligan, this small variegated hosta arose as an open-pollinated seedling of *H.* 'Lakeside Black Mama'. The cultivar is distinguished by its exceptionally dark, near-black green leaves that develop white streaking later in the growing season, combined with very dark purple flowers on dark scapes.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Pot Black' forms a compact mound 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall and 17 inches (43.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for the genus, and is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture due to its small stature. Companion plantings may include fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera* species that contrast with its broad, dark foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls.
