Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Porcelain' is a small sport of an unnamed seedling, distinguished by its white leaf centers edged with two shades of green. The broadly ovate, moderately cupped leaves are 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, with creamy white centers and dark and light green, slightly rippled margins measuring 0.75 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) wide. The leaf surface is slightly shiny on both sides, and the blade is lightly twisted, folded, and wavy, with five vein pairs and a flat base.

In the Garden

This compact cultivar forms a mound 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas of its size, and is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Its small stature and variegated foliage pair effectively with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Porcelain' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
