Overview
Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Plum Nutty' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *H.* 'Candy Dish' and a complex cross involving *H. pynchnophylla*, *H.* 'Harvest Dandy', and *H.* 'Raspberry Sorbet'. The plant is visually distinctive for its heavily ruffled, ovate leaves with medium green margins, a very shiny upper and lower surface, and a lightly corrugated, moderately flat blade.
In the Garden
'Plum Nutty' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for variegated hostas, and its arching scapes rise 34 to 36 inches (86.4 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage. The plant pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Plum Nutty' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
