Overview
Registered in 2005 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Planet X' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its unusual leaf coloration: a medium green center bordered by a broad, intensely blue-green margin with a hazy transition zone. The heavy wax coating on the margin produces a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides, while the leaf blade is moderately cupped and lightly corrugated, giving the plant a textured, puckered appearance.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. Like most blue-green hostas, 'Planet X' performs best in partial to full shade, where the waxy bloom on the leaves is preserved. Its medium size and thick, cupped leaves make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden; it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance offers moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions.
