Overview

Registered in 2007 by R. Benedict, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from self-pollinating *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. 'Plain Jane' is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with greenish-yellow flat margins, a dull glaucous bloom on the upper surface, and a notably glaucous, puckered underside.

In the Garden

'Plain Jane' forms a mound-like clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits mid-border positions or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and shade-tolerant *Geranium* species. Its broad, lightly corrugated leaves and contrasting margins provide textural interest.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may cause damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
