Overview
Registered in 2014 by J. Schwarz from originations by M. Zilis, *Hosta* 'Pit Bull' is a large cultivar derived from a cross between *H. 'Jewel of the Nile'* and *H. 'Gosan Sunproof'*. It is visually distinguished by its broad, blue-green leaves that are slightly shiny on the upper surface, flat-margined, and lightly cupped, with a broadly ovate shape and rounded base.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 65 inches (165 cm) in diameter at maturity, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. The smooth, substantial leaves pair well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance offers some resistance to slugs, though monitoring is still advisable in damp conditions.
