Overview
Registered in 1983 by R. Savory, 'Pinwheel' is a small sport distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves with medium and dark green margins surrounding a lighter center. The variegation pattern, combined with the leaf shape, creates a pinwheel-like visual effect.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar reaches approximately 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and spreads to 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its small size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pinwheel' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
