Overview
Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society (BHHS), 'Pineapple Poll' is a medium-sized variegated hosta derived from a cross between *Hosta sieboldiana* and *Hosta* 'Lancifolia'. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of green leaf margins with a lighter, often yellowish or chartreuse, center, creating a crisp variegation pattern on a fast-growing, mound-forming plant.
In the Garden
'Pineapple Poll' performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for most hostas, and forms a medium-sized mound reaching approximately 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) in height and 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) in width at maturity. Its moderate size and fast growth make it suitable for mid-border positions, woodland gardens, or as an accent in shade beds. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, though its compact habit also suits larger containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pineapple Poll' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
