Overview
Registered in 2009, this large hosta cultivar originated from a cross between *H.* 'Breeder's Choice' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Frances Williams' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the variable streaking of yellow and white across shades of green within the leaf blade, combined with white margins, a pattern that gives the plant its name.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Pin Stripe Sister' forms a mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) high and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The broadly ovate leaves, each 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, have a cordate base, slightly rippled margins, and a lightly corrugated surface that is slightly shiny on both sides. The 12 vein pairs and green scapes (20 inches/50.8 cm tall) support pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers but effective as a specimen or in mixed borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable, as foliage is susceptible to both pests.
