Overview

Registered in 1983 by K. Vaughn, this medium-sized hosta cultivar is a cross between a *Hosta* 'William Lachman' sibling (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Frances Williams' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with white margins that develop cream and green striped variegation, and for its tall scapes reaching 32 to 39 inches (81.3 to 99.1 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Pin Stripe' forms a clump 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter and 26 inches (66.0 cm) tall, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, each bearing 11 vein pairs. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for border plantings or as a specimen in shaded beds. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not typically recommended for containers due to its mature spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are advised in typical hosta-growing zones.
