Overview

Registered in 1996, 'Pewter Frost' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H. pycnophylla* and *H. montana*. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, heavily glaucous leaves with a very shiny upper surface and a pale, frosted bloom on the underside, combined with slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height. It is best suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its blue-green foliage holds color well. The large, cordate leaves (10 inches long, 7 inches wide) with nine vein pairs make it an effective specimen or accent plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Pewter Frost' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may benefit from protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
