Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Persian Red' is a small, variegated cultivar derived from *H.* 'Crested Surf' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely wavy, medium green leaves with heavily rippled margins that become saw-like at the leaf base, combined with bright red petioles that transition to dotted red and then green, and a green scape heavily speckled with red.

In the Garden

This small hosta reaches approximately 11 inches (29 cm) in height and 15 inches (38 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It is best suited for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its compact size makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of a shaded border. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, heucheras, and small woodland perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
