Overview

Registered in 1987, 'PeeDee Elfin Bells' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta ventricosa*. It is visually distinctive for its variegated foliage, featuring dark green leaves with a dull sheen, slight undulations along the margins, and four vein pairs per leaf.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) and a height of 9.5 inches (24.1 cm), with scapes extending up to 22 inches (55.9 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, heucheras, and astilbes. Its small size makes it suitable for container cultivation or placement in the front of shaded borders.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, which may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
