Overview
Registered in 1997 by A. Summers and subsequently registered by P. Ruh, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana*. 'Pastures New' forms a compact, mound-like clump with variegated foliage; its medium green leaves are edged with a flat, lighter margin, and the leaf surface is dull on both sides.
In the Garden
'Pastures New' reaches approximately 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and spreads to 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. Its small size makes it an excellent companion for other diminutive perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*, and it is well-suited to container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if necessary.
