Overview

Registered in 2015 by B. & V. Skaggs and M. Gilligan, *Hosta* 'Pastels' is a small-sized cultivar derived from self-pollinated *Hosta* 'Yankee Blue' F2. It is distinguished by its unusual soft creamy pastel green leaves with white margins, a rare color combination in the genus.

In the Garden

'Pastels' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. Its elliptic leaves, 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) wide, feature 5 to 7 vein pairs, a tapered base, and moderately wavy, slightly rippled margins; both leaf surfaces are dull. This small cultivar is suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders, and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or fine-textured groundcovers. It performs best in partial to full shade and is well-suited for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pastels' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and benefits from protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
