Overview
Registered in 2015 by B. & V. Skaggs and M. Gilligan, 'Pals' is a medium-sized sport distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins. The broadly ovate, lightly corrugated foliage displays a dull upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath, with narrow, slightly rippled edges.
In the Garden
'Pals' forms a mound-like clump reaching 26.5 inches (67.3 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height, with upright petioles that give the plant a tidy habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its moderate growth rate and medium size make it suitable for border fronts or woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pals' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
