Overview

Registered in 1976 by E. Minks, *Hosta* 'Paintbrush' is a large cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Undulata' (pod parent) and *H. ventricosa* 'Aureomaculata' (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its chartreuse green leaves with gold margins, a coloration that persists through the growing season.

In the Garden

'Paintbrush' reaches a mature size of 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with scapes rising 20 to 24 inches (50.8 to 61.0 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, prominently veined leaves (14 inches long, 5 inches wide, with 6 to 8 vein pairs) provide substantial ground coverage. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and shade-tolerant *Geranium* species. Its size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders, though it is not appropriate for small containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
