Overview
Registered in 1996, 'Judy's Surprise' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta* 'Rosanne' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Little White Lines' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with medium gold, slightly rippled margins, a combination inherited from its parentage.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a semi-upright growth habit and slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium gold margins may brighten with more light. The glaucous green scapes rise 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage, making it suitable for mid-border positions alongside other shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the slightly shiny leaf surfaces.
