Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Joyce Trott', 'Joyful' is a small, mound-forming cultivar notable for its reversed variegation pattern: blue-green leaves with creamy white margins, in contrast to its parent's green-centered, white-margined foliage. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases and lightly wavy margins, measuring 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, with 6 to 7 vein pairs and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.

In the Garden

'Joyful' forms a compact mound 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a medium-fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and is well-suited for small borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small size. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas with contrasting leaf shapes or colors.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Joyful' is moderately susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protection in areas where these pests are prevalent.
