Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, 'Jon's Gem' is a miniature hosta of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its small, ovate leaves with light green, slightly rippled margins and a dull surface, forming a compact mound.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders due to its miniature size. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas, and it is an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
