Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Joker' is a small-sized sport distinguished by its green leaf centers and narrow, chartreuse to light yellow margins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 6 inches long and 4 inches wide, have a dull surface on both sides and a flat, cordate base, with 5 to 7 pairs of veins and margins 0.3 to 0.5 cm wide.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Joker' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches in height and 45 inches in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials that complement its muted green and gold coloration.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor regularly and use appropriate controls if needed.
