Overview

Registered in 2003 from unknown parentage, 'Johnny Angel' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its heavily corrugated, deeply cupped leaves with downturned edges and broad golden yellow margins. The broadly ovate, cordate-based foliage measures 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide, with 12 vein pairs and a slightly shiny underside.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vibrant, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The large size makes it unsuitable for containers but effective as a specimen or in mass plantings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While typical hosta-growing zones apply, the heavily corrugated foliage may be less palatable to slugs and deer than smoother-leaved cultivars, though protection is still advisable in high-pressure areas.
