Overview

Registered in 2002, *Hosta* 'John Wells' is a small-sized cultivar notable for its highly unstable variegation, producing variable streaks and mottling of cream white on medium green leaves. Originating as a seedling of *Hosta* 'Christmas Tree Gala' with an unknown pollen parent, this clump-forming plant is distinguished by its variegated petioles and seed pods, as well as its exceptional fertility.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'John Wells' reaches a mature size of 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, forming an upright mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small stature makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. The cream-white leaf margins and variable central streaking provide contrast when paired with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While not especially prone to slug damage, standard preventive measures may be warranted in damp conditions, and deer may browse the foliage.
