Overview

Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'John Tyler' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage named for the tenth President of the United States. It is visually distinguished by its blue-green, ovate leaves with cordate bases, moderately wavy margins, and a thick glaucous bloom on the undersides that imparts a moderately shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

'John Tyler' forms a mound-like clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry spells and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage accordingly.
