Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'John Metzgar' is a large, mound-forming cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. ventricosa* (pod parent) and an unnamed seedling (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins that contrast with a lighter center, combined with a very shiny upper leaf surface and a slightly shiny underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its large, textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its substantial size and bold foliage pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the large, tender leaves.
