Overview

Registered in 2007 from seedling parentage, *Hosta* 'John James' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, intensely corrugated leaves with shiny dark green, slightly rippled margins and a very glossy upper surface. The leaves are cupped and puckered, presenting a heavily textured appearance, and the plant produces clear white flowers on scapes up to 76.2 cm (30 in) high.

In the Garden

'John James' forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 114.3 cm (45 in) in diameter and 66.0 cm (26 in) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its bold, textured foliage provides a strong accent in borders or woodland gardens. The large, rounded leaves pair well with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or heucheras, and the plant's upright habit allows it to stand out among lower-growing companions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The cultivar is noted for insect and disease resistance, though standard slug management may still be advisable in damp conditions.
