Overview

Registered in 2008 from open-pollinated seedlings, *Hosta* 'John D. Barnot' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on the undersides and slightly rippled, medium green leaf margins. The ovate leaves are flat with a flat base, measuring 7.25 inches (18.4 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with 7 to 8 vein pairs and a slightly shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

'John D. Barnot' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and is noted for disease and insect resistance. The green scapes rise 28 to 32 inches (71.1 to 81.3 cm) above the foliage, making this cultivar suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While noted for resistance to common pests, standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in high-pressure areas.
