Overview
Registered in 2007, 'John Arva' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta* 'Regal Rhubarb' and an unnamed seedling. It is visually distinctive for its upright, rounded habit, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and light waviness, and dark purple scapes that contrast with black-purple seed pods.
In the Garden
This hosta reaches a mature diameter of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 19 inches (48.3 cm), with scapes extending 30 to 40 inches (76.2 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its moderate growth rate makes it suitable for mid-border positions in woodland gardens or shaded perennial beds. The ovate, slightly shiny leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'John Arva' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
