Overview

Registered in 2015 by R. Axmear and M. Gilligan, 'JoBob' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its green leaves with flat gold margins and reddish-green lower stems. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 7.75 inches (19.7 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, emerge with a yellow to chartreuse cast before maturing, and the leaf surface is dull above with a slight sheen beneath.

In the Garden

'JoBob' forms a mound 13 inches (33.0 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits it for mid-border positions or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. The red-green scapes, reaching 34 to 38 inches (86.4 to 96.5 cm), bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer and contrast well with ferns or other shade perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'JoBob' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
