Overview

Registered in 1998 by B. Sligh, this large hosta cultivar is a seedling of *Hosta sieboldiana* crossed with another *H. sieboldiana* selection. It is distinguished by its broad blue-green leaves with wide white margins that are mottled with white, and its upright, moderately growing habit.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Jim Matthews' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 15.5 inches (39.4 cm), with scapes rising 15 to 18 inches (38.1 to 45.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. Its large, blue-green leaves with white margins pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, particularly in damp conditions, and deer may browse the leaves.
