Overview

Registered in 1982 by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'Jim Cooper' is a giant hybrid derived from *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance'. It is visually distinguished by its large, heavily textured green leaves with bright deep yellow margins, forming a substantial mound.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature size of 46 inches (117 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61 cm) in height, with individual leaves up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vivid, and is well-suited as a specimen or accent in larger borders. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are advisable. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
