Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster of the American Hosta Society, 'Jelly Belly' is a small upright hosta distinguished by its variegated foliage: light green leaves with some central streaking. The ovate leaves measure 4 inches (10.2 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with flat margins, slight glossiness on the upper surface, and a dull underside. Five to seven vein pairs are present, and the leaves exhibit light twisting and waviness.
In the Garden
'Jelly Belly' reaches a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and a height of 7 inches (17.8 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its compact size makes it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants might include small ferns or shade-tolerant groundcovers that do not overwhelm its modest stature.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitoring and protective measures are advisable.
