Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Gum Drop' registered by C. Harstad in 1990, 'Jelly Bean' is a small hosta distinguished by its green leaves with white margins, which are notably wider than the green central leaf area. The leaf blade measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) long by 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with 6 to 7 vein pairs, and displays a dark green margin that transitions to white.

In the Garden

Mature plants reach approximately 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, making 'Jelly Bean' suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as heucheras, ferns, or miniature sedges. Its compact size also makes it an excellent candidate for trough gardens or small patio pots.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Jelly Bean' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones; protective measures may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
