Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Jaz' is a medium-sized hybrid between *H.* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and *H. yingeri* (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its nearly round, heavy-substance leaves that are held horizontally, displaying a green center with greenish-yellow flat margins and a slightly shiny surface on both sides.

In the Garden

'Haz' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. The leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide with a rounded base. Scapes rise 16 to 20 inches (40.6 to 50.8 cm) above the foliage. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its substantial leaves make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Jaz' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
