Overview
Registered in 1994 by J. J. Grullemans and introduced by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Jay Jay' is a giant blue-green cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. sieboldiana*. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, heavily glaucous leaves with slightly rippled margins and cordate bases, forming a dense, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Jay Jay' reaches a mature spread of 34 inches (86.4 cm) and a height of 25 inches (63.5 cm), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, textured leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in form or color. The blue-green scapes, reaching 30 to 38 inches (76.2 to 96.5 cm), bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
